企业办理跨境人民币信用证结算业务，需先由开户银行向人民银行等主管机构推荐成为“跨境贸易人民币结算试点企业”，经批准后即可获得办理资格。
在业务准备阶段，企业应提前签订以人民币作为结算货币的贸易合同，完成人民币申报手续，并向银行提交国际结算所需的全套业务文件和申请。除贸易合同与结算安排外，海外贸易伙伴亦需在境外商业银行开立人民币账户，以便接收人民币款项；若海外企业为买方，则需提前通过境外银行取得支付所需的人民币资金。
跨境人民币结算是指人民币在跨境贸易中的直接使用，由银行配套提供国际结算、贸易融资及资本管理等服务。根据人民银行等六部委关于扩大跨境贸易人民币结算试点有关问题的通知，cross-border trade in goods、服务贸易等经常项目均可采用人民币进行结算。
